Day 29 – Crew Neck Collars

Basic Crew Neck Collar

A basic crew neck collar is when you pick up stitches around the neckline and knit (typically in ribbing) to the desired depth of the collar and bind off all stitches.

For a Pullover:
Pick up all stitches around your neckline and knit in the round until you have reached your desired depth and bind off loosely in pattern. A classic 1×1 rib is great for this type of neckline, especially paired with a “Tubular Bind Off”

For a Cardigan:
Work your vertical button band first. After your button band is complete, pick up all stitches around the neckline (including the top edge of the button band) and knit back and forth in pattern until you have reached your desired depth and bind off loosely in pattern. A classic 1×1 rib is great for this type of neckline, especially paired with a “Tubular Bind Off”

Doubled Crew Neck Collar

A doubled crew neck collar is when you work your neckline to double the desired depth and then fold it under and attach the bound off edge to the neckline edge creating a doubled fabric and nice edge.

For a Pullover:
Pick up all stitches around your neckline and knit in the round until you have reached double your desired depth and bind off loosely in pattern. Sew bound off edge of collar to base of collar on the inside of the sweater. A classic 1×1 rib is great for this type of neckline.

For a Cardigan:
Work your collar first. After your collar is complete, pick up stitches for button band including the edge of the collar. Pick up all stitches around your neckline and knit in the back and forth in pattern until you have reached double your desired depth and bind off loosely in pattern. Sew bound off edge of collar to base of collar on the inside of the sweater. A classic 1×1 rib is great for this type of neckline.
