Day 29 – V-Neck Collars

Classic V-Neck Collar

This collar is used for pullovers only.

Place a stitch marker at the center point of the V. Pick up and knit an even number of stitches around the neckline starting at the center back of the neck. Join for working in the round.
Row 1: Work in 1×1 rib to 2 stitches before the marker, ssk, slip the marker, k2tog, work to the end of the round.

Repeat row 1 until you have reached your desired depth. Bind off all stitches using the “Tubular Bind Off”

Crossover V-Neck Collar

This collar is used for pullovers only.

Pick up an odd number of stitches around the neck, beginning and ending at the front (at the base of the V). Work back and forth without joining in the round until you have reached your desired depth. With the left side overlapping the right, sew the end of the band in place. A classic 1×1 rib is great for this type of neckline, especially paired with a “Tubular Bind Off”

V-Neck Cardigan

The V-neckband and front button bands can be worked at the same time.

Pick up and knit stitches evenly around the entire piece, beginning at the base of the left side front and ending at the base of the right side front. Generally you will want to pick up about 2 stitches for every three rows if you plan to work in 1×1 ribbing.

Work in your desired stitch pattern until your band is half of your desired width. At this point you will add button holes on one side if you will be adding buttons.

For Buttonholes
Step 1:
Place a stitch marker at each point you would like place a buttonhole. Knit to your first buttonhole marker, bind off 1, 2 or 3 stitches (depending on how large your buttons are), repeat at each buttonhole marker then work to the end of the row.

Step 2:
Work to the first set of bound off buttonhole stitches, where the stitches were bound off cast on the same amount of stitches to create the second half of the buttonhole, repeat at each set of bound off buttonhole stitches.

Continue working in pattern until your band is you desired depth. Bind off all stitches. I prefer to use a tubular bind off for a professional looking edge.Sew on buttons on the opposite side from the buttonholes.
