For use on a crew neck sweater
Pick up and knit all stitches around the neckline, be sure that the final number of stitches is a multiple of 2.
Place marker and join for knitting in the round. Work all stitches in ribbing (1×1 or 2×2 ribbing works best) until turtle neck has reached your desired length.
Bind off all stitches loosely.

Shawl Collar
Beginning at the base on the right side of your collar opening, pick up and knit every stitch around the neckline all the way to the base of the left side of your collar opening. Do not pick up stitches along the base.
Work back and forth in your desired stitch pattern (usually these types of necklines are knit with 1×1 ribbing) until you have completed enough rows for your collar to easily reach across the entire width of your shawl collar base.
Bind off all stitches loosely. Try the tubular bind off or binding off in pattern.
Seam the edges of your collar, left crossing over right to the base of your collar base. Weave in all ends.
